The Passo dello Stelvio is one of the most famous and spectacular mountain passes in the world, located in the Italian Alps near the borders with Switzerland and Austria. It connects the Valtellina valley (Lombardy) with the Val Venosta (South Tyrol) and reaches an impressive altitude of 2,757 meters (9,045 ft) — making it the highest paved mountain pass in Italy and the second highest in the Alps.

Built between 1820 and 1825 by the Austrian Empire to connect Lombardy with the rest of the empire, the road is a masterpiece of engineering, featuring 48 legendary hairpin bends on its northern side (from Prato allo Stelvio) and equally stunning turns on the southern side (from Bormio).

The Stelvio Pass is a bucket-list route for motorcyclists, cyclists, and driving enthusiasts, known for its steep gradients, sharp switchbacks, and panoramic views of glaciers and rugged alpine peaks. It regularly features in the Giro d’Italia and has become a symbol of endurance, skill, and adventure.

The pass is usually open from late May to October, depending on weather conditions, and is closed in winter due to heavy snowfall. At the summit, riders find cafés, souvenir stands, and breathtaking views across the Ortler Alps.

In short:
The Stelvio Pass embodies Alpine grandeur and human ingenuity—a thrilling ascent of hairpin bends, high altitude, and history, making it one of the most iconic roads on Earth.
